Effect of ambient lighting in scannographs

It's interesting comparing the effect ambient lighting has on scannographs.

Take the below images for example: The first one featured standard daylight room lighting, and thus resulted in a grey background. The second one, however, was created in a darkened room, with black gloves over my hands. The resulting effect, as one might expect, is a near pitch black background
